Renting where you want to live while owning an investment property somewhere more affordable. It lets you enter the market without changing your lifestyle or location, and the loan is assessed as investment lending with rental income counted. The trade-offs are losing the main residence capital gains tax exemption on the investment and paying rent that builds no equity, so it is worth modelling rather than assuming.
